Gavlyn is a Los Angeles rapper from the San Fernando Valley, a Broken Complex Records artist known for sharp boom-bap lyricism, melodic hooks and a long creative partnership with producer DJ Hoppa.
Background
Spotify’s artist biography describes a Latin American rapper born and raised in the San Fernando Valley and shaped by the Los Angeles rap scene. L.A. Taco (21 May 2018) says she started on MySpace, went on to headline shows across the country, and moves between fast, spitfire verses and sing-song hooks. Huck (31 January 2014) profiled her as a central member of the Los Angeles crew Organized Threat, which had 24 members, and recorded her naming Suga Free, DJ Quik, A$AP Ferg, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony and Nipsey Hussle among her favourites. Metro Silicon Valley (10 July 2017) compares her style to late-1990s East Coast female rappers while noting that she does not fit neatly into that mould.
Releases and milestones
Her debut album “From the Art” dates from 2012, followed by projects such as “Habit That You Blame”, “Modest Confidence” and “Make Up for Your Break Up”. Her early single “Guilty Pleasure” (2013) rode chopped trumpet samples over boom-bap, while “Why Wait?” (2016) and the 2017 single “Calling” brought in DJ Hoppa’s production and a more modern, trap-inflected sound. L.A. Taco notes that she was releasing music almost monthly in 2018 and appears with Reverie and Vel the Wonder in the “Looking Back” video. “Headspace”, her 2018 album with DJ Hoppa, was praised by Sugar Cayne for its looped horn sample and boom-bap drums. UndergroundHipHopBlog (24 September 2021) reviewed “Say Less, Love More”, her seventh full-length after a three-year break, scoring it 8/10 and calling it possibly her magnum opus. Her top track on Spotify is “Time to Grow” with the French duo L’Entourloop, and she has kept releasing: Spotify lists singles in 2025 including “Best Life” with Santa Salut and Reverie, “Jean Flannel”, “Starseed” and “Love Lucy in Her Cortez”, and “Clock It” with Reverie, Louden and Whitney Peyton in 2026.
Where to start
“We On” with DJ Hoppa is the featured video, “Headspace” and “Self Love” are the essential DJ Hoppa tracks, and “Time to Grow” is the best-known collaboration.
