Mrs M is a Mongolian rapper from Ulaanbaatar, widely described as the first breakout star of the city’s hip-hop scene.
Background
Mrs M started on drums in a rock band, then learned guitar and began writing her own songs. She raps and sings in Mongolian, English and Mandarin, and her sound blends smooth soul, groovy hip-hop and funky trap beats, with Erykah Badu among her inspirations. She has said her aim is to bring Mongolian hip-hop to a global audience and to champion female rappers; she has also noted that rappers were the ones speaking candidly about politics after the Soviet era.
Releases and milestones
She debuted in 2015 with “Tsor Gants (My Only One)”, produced by Lil Thug-E. Her viral hit “Bang” appeared on B2 Music’s Vibe Presents: Urban Asia Vol. 1 in 2018, alongside artists including Jackson Wang, Bohan Phoenix and Higher Brothers. In 2022 she joined Warner Music Asia’s Asiatic Records, and “Daughter of Khan”, inspired by Genghis Khan, was the first track from the label’s asiatic.wav volume 1 EP.
Where to start
“Daughter of Khan” is the clearest statement of her identity and ambitions.
