Noname (Fatimah Nyeema Warner) is a rapper, songwriter and poet from Chicago’s Bronzeville, known for the mixtape Telefone (2016), the album Room 25 (2018) and the community project Noname Book Club.
Background
Noname started in slam poetry in 2010 and moved into rap after freestyling with local artists. In 2013 she sang the chorus and added a verse to “Lost” on Chance the Rapper’s mixtape Acid Rap. In 2019 she formed the trio Ghetto Sage with Smino and Saba.
Releases
Telefone (31 July 2016) was released free on Bandcamp and pressed on vinyl in 2017. Room 25 (14 September 2018), her self-released debut studio album, received Pitchfork’s Best New Music designation. A planned album, Factory Baby, was cancelled in December 2021, and Sundial followed on 11 August 2023. She performed a Tiny Desk Concert for NPR in 2017 and played Coachella in 2023.
In July 2019 she founded Noname Book Club, which selects two books a month by authors of color, partners with locally owned bookstores and libraries, and had donated books to more than 400 prisons by 2023.
