tg.blk is a rapper, singer and producer from Mombasa, Kenya, whose self-made, melodic hip hop has built an international audience from the Kenyan coast.
Background
tg.blk grew up in Mombasa and began making music in her university years, recording, mixing and mastering her early songs herself. In an OkayAfrica interview she describes releasing music at her own pace and treating the process as unforced and personal. Her blend of boom-bap, funk and 80s-leaning R&B, with candid songwriting about relationships and confidence, has made her one of the most distinctive new voices from East Africa.
Releases and milestones
Her 2019 debut single “Love Being Used”, made in a university bedroom, passed four million streams according to OkayAfrica. She followed it with the EP ITS NOT THAT DEEP in 2024. In 2026 she released the single “Stop It” and the EP besides you, the first part of a planned trilogy tracing the course of a relationship, recorded in Mombasa (Clash, The Line of Best Fit). Apple Music named her to its Africa Rising class of 2026.
Where to start
“Love Being Used” is the song that started it all and a good first listen to her voice and writing.
