Haysen Cheng is a Hong Kong rapper and singer who moves between Cantonese, Mandarin and English and calls himself the “Hong Kong Don”.
Background
Haysen Cheng (Cheng King-hei) is known for a gruff, instantly recognisable voice and strongly melodic hooks. The South China Morning Post profiled him as an artist aiming at an audience beyond Hong Kong, with a stated ambition to be a hip hop counterpart to the late Cantopop icon Leslie Cheung. He spent time in Chengdu working with established artists and built a following in mainland China; his songs centre on motivation and resilience.
Releases and milestones
According to the SCMP, his debut album Durags & Chopsticks appeared in 2019, followed by the single “Two Step” in 2020, and a first Cantonese-language album was in preparation at the time of the interview. Lifted Asia has followed his releases and videos closely, including a feature in its The Next 5 series. “神龍擺尾” brings him together with fellow Hong Kong rapper Novel Fergus.
