FLOHIO (Funmi Ohiosumah) is a Nigerian-born British rapper from south London. She is known for hard-hitting electronic beats, double-time flows and a refusal to be pinned to one genre, and in particular to be called a grime artist.
Background
She was born in Lagos and moved with her family to Bermondsey, south-east London, at the age of nine. Rolling Stone UK reports that her breakthrough came with a guest verse on God Colony’s 2016 track “SE16,” named after the Bermondsey postcode where she grew up. Her debut EP Nowhere Near followed in 2016. Dazed profiled her early on, when she still held a day job as a graphic designer at a record label.
Releases
- Nowhere Near (2016): debut EP.
- Wild Yout (2018): second EP.
- No Panic No Pain (2020): debut mixtape, reviewed by Pitchfork.
- Out of Heart (7 October 2022): debut studio album, released through AWAL.
- Singles: “All The Thrills” (31 July 2024) and “Crocodile” with the producer Manni Dee (2 July 2025).
Sound and collaborators
Her sound mixes trap, grime and club electronics, with unusual beats and sudden changes of pace. She has worked with the London duo God Colony and the Berlin electronic producers Modeselektor, and she has said she rejects the “grime” label as too limiting. Her lyrics are often confessional. In the Rolling Stone interview she describes herself as something of an “agony aunt” for her listeners.
Where to start
“SE16” for her origins, “Whiplash” (2021) for her sharper electronic side, and the album Out of Heart for the fullest picture.
