Lucasraps is a South African rapper born in Cape Town and raised in Durban. He came up in Durban’s rap scene, was signed to Def Jam Africa in 2021 and has worked closely with Blxckie, Nasty C and Dr Peppa.
Background
According to Hype Magazine, Lucasraps started rapping at school in Durban. Music In Africa notes that he performed alongside Nasty C in 2016 and left school in 2018 to pursue music full-time. His profile grew in 2019 with a feature on Dr Peppa’s “What It Is” and the single “Ah Ah Ah Ah” with Blxckie, and his appearance on Blxckie’s “Big Time Sh’lappa” in 2020 is described as his breakthrough. During the 2020 lockdown he co-founded the Rona Boys crew with Blxckie and others and released music regularly on SoundCloud. He signed to Def Jam Africa in 2021, after an earlier spell with DJ Maphorisa’s BlaqBoy Music, and was named an Apple Music Up Next artist for South Africa that year.
